Getting to the boat: flights, visa, money, health

Updated 4 November 2026

A first time in Indonesia for a Komodo trip starts in Labuan Bajo: Raja Bintang 01 sails from there and never from Bali or Lombok. Arrive one day before. The trip ends between 12:00 and 12:30, so book flights home after 13:00. Check visa rules before you travel; each table below shows the date it was checked.

Ask about arrival

Visa: verify before you fly

Many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival, and a few ASEAN passports enter without one for a short stay. Other nationalities must apply online before travelling. The lists, the fees and the length of stay change, so the fees in the table below are indicative and carry the date they were checked.

Check the official immigration portal for your own passport, and do it before you buy flights. A passport should have enough validity left on arrival. The table shows the date of its last check, and that date is the limit of what this page knows.

The table below sets out the points to verify. We are not the immigration office, and a written answer from it outranks anything on this page.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id.

The flight to Labuan Bajo

Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo takes domestic flights from the main hubs, Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya, and a small number of international ones. The flight out of Bali takes a little over an hour; out of Jakarta, around three. The airport is a short drive from the harbour.

Arrive the day before the boat leaves. A flight that lands on sailing day risks the pickup, and the boat does not wait. On the last day the trip ends between 12:00 and 12:30, so a flight home should leave after 13:00, or on the next day.

We do not sell flight tickets. We help you choose an arrival day and a hotel, and we collect you from either.

Notes, cards and where the cash machines are

The currency is the Indonesian rupiah. Hotels, dive shops and charters take cards, sometimes with a surcharge. Small shops, markets, taxis and local restaurants work in cash or by QRIS only.

Cash machines stand along the main road near the harbour and at the airport. None are inside the park or on the islands. Withdrawal limits per transaction are modest and your own bank adds a fee, so draw cash before you board.

Park charges are confirmed on your quote. Keep small notes for tips and for anything that is not on the invoice.

Water, sun and a doctor's advice

Tap water in Indonesia is not safe to drink. Bottled mineral water is provided on the boat, and coffee and tea are free-flow. Bring a reusable bottle, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, and carry 1.5 litres of water on trails, as there is little shade on Padar or the Komodo paths.

Mosquito-borne illness exists in Indonesia, so ask a travel clinic before you leave about vaccinations and what suits you. We make no medical claims. Travel insurance with medical cover is recommended.

Pharmacies in Labuan Bajo have a limited choice and the islands have none, so bring your own prescription medicines and anything for seasickness.

FAQ

Can I take a boat from Bali to Komodo, or is there no start but Labuan Bajo?

No. Raja Bintang 01 sails from Labuan Bajo and returns there, and there is no Bali or Lombok departure. To join her, fly to Komodo Airport. The usual routes connect through Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya, and a night in Labuan Bajo before sailing is the sound plan.

Can you arrange a fast private speedboat from Maumere to Labuan Bajo?

A speedboat transfer from Maumere is not part of Raja Bintang 01's programme, which starts and ends in Labuan Bajo. Ask us on WhatsApp whether a separate transfer can be quoted. Send the date, the number of guests and the luggage; any quote reaches you in writing before you pay.

Do I need a visa for Indonesia?

It depends on your passport, and the rules change. Many nationalities obtain a visa on arrival, others must apply online first, and a few enter visa-free for a short stay. Check the official immigration portal before you book flights. The visa table on this page shows the date it was checked.

When should I arrive in Labuan Bajo?

The day before sailing. Pickup on an open trip starts at 09:30, and a flight that lands on the same morning leaves no margin. On a private charter, boarding is set with your flights, but an arrival the day before still gives you a calm start.
