Climbing Padar before the sun

Padar is the stop the whole route is built around. The classic viewpoint looks over three bays whose sand differs in colour, and the light is best at dawn, so the climb starts in the dark.

  • Arrival: a headtorch beam on a loose, steep path, and the boat's lights falling behind.
  • At the stop: about 25 to 45 minutes up to the main viewpoint; the upper ridge takes longer.
  • Leaving: first light over the three bays, then the descent, 20 to 30 minutes, and back to the boat.

Plan on leaving the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise. The crew confirms the hour the evening before.

Sunrise times through the year

The start time moves with the calendar. Sunrise at Padar falls at 05:54 in January, 06:06 in March, 06:14 in June, 05:56 in September and 05:31 in November. The earliest of the year is 05:31, the latest 06:18. The table below gives every month.

July, August and December are the busiest months on the ridge, so the viewpoint is shared with other boats. Padar comes early on day two, at sunrise when the plan allows, and the crew wakes the group in the dark, so go to bed with your shoes by the door.

Cloud flattens the colour but not the view, and a clear horizon gives the sharpest line. No month is promised clear, and the captain decides the anchorage and the order of the day with the weather. The plan is tentative.

Packing for the ridge

Sturdy shoes matter more than anything else you carry, because parts of the path are loose and steep. Add a hat, water, a headtorch and a light layer for the wait before sunrise. Walking poles help on the way down, where knees complain. A ranger is required on Padar, and the park package covers that apart from the fare.

No Komodo dragons live on Padar, and it is not a beach stop. The point is the ridge viewpoint. Guests come for the view and leave with it, and nobody should expect anything with a tail.

Padar inside the three days

Padar opens day two of the three-day route, after the first night at anchor and before Pink Beach. The four-day route is a sample, and its stops are agreed in writing. The whole boat costs IDR 78,000,000 (≈ USD 4,785) for up to 16 guests on the three-day route, and a single cabin on an open trip starts at IDR 4,750,000 (≈ USD 291) per person.

If you are weighing the climb against a slower morning, tell us the ages and the fitness of the group, and we say plainly whether Padar suits all of you. A guest who skips the climb stays with the boat at anchor, and the rest of the day is unchanged.

FAQ

Is Padar worth it on a phinisi trip?

For most guests who can climb, it is the best hour of day two. You start on a dark path with loose steps, climb for about 25 to 45 minutes to a view over three bays of differently coloured sand, and watch the sunrise from the ridge.

How long do we stay at Padar?

The captain sets the time ashore on the day, with the tide and the weather. Count the climb at about 25 to 45 minutes up and 20 to 30 minutes down, and ask us for the plan for your date.

Can children or older travellers manage Padar?

Plan for children of six and over to walk it and for younger ones to be carried. Seniors can manage with breaks and poles, though the descent strains knees. The path has steps and loose sections. Padar is optional, and the boat waits at anchor. Tell us about heart or mobility conditions before booking.
