What luxury means on Raja Bintang 01
Updated 4 November 2026
A Komodo boat tour at this level can be checked line by line. For Raja Bintang 01 that means one boat for up to 16 guests at IDR 78,000,000 (≈ USD 4,785) for three days, two private balconies, a crew of 6, 30 life jackets and 8 fire extinguishers.
The sea comes first on the checklist
Comfort on a phinisi at anchor depends on calm water. A balcony is a fine place in a still bay and a narrow ledge in a swell. So before any cabin or fare, look at the month.
The matrix below shows the sea, the visibility and the crowds for each month. It is a chart of conditions and not a promise, and no month guarantees a sighting. The balcony evenings the Master and the Deluxe offer are at their best in the calm months, April to June and October to November.
| Month | Sea | Visibility | Mantas | Crowds | Rain | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | rough | low | peak | low | wet | Wet season at its roughest: showers, a high sea and the quietest water. Sailing may be closed on some days, and no month promises mantas. |
| February | rough | low | peak | low | wet | Heavy showers and a rough sea continue, with low visibility. Few boats are out, and a changed plan is more likely than in any other month. |
| March | moderate | medium | good | low | wet | Showers ease and the sea settles. Visibility is middling, crowds are low, and the weather still decides the order of stops. |
| April | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | The dry season opens with a calm sea and clear water. A good month for the trail at Padar and for snorkelling. |
| May | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Dry, calm and clear, with moderate crowds. Conditions are steady for both the climb and the water. |
| June | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Dry and clear, with the south-east wind beginning to build. The sea is still calm for most of the month. |
| July | rough | medium | peak | high | dry | Dry but windy, with a choppier sea and the busiest anchorages. Book early; the captain may pick a sheltered bay. |
| August | rough | medium | peak | high | dry | The windiest month of the dry season, with full anchorages. Transits can be rough, and a harbour closure is possible for a day or two. |
| September | moderate | high | peak | medium | dry | The wind eases and visibility improves. A good shoulder month with moderate crowds and no sighting promised. |
| October | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Calm, clear and hot, with fewer boats than in July and August. Bring a hat and water for the trails. |
| November | calm | high | fair | low | dry | The dry season ends with a calm sea, clear water and quiet sites. Sunrise at Padar comes early. |
| December | moderate | medium | peak | medium | wet | The wet season begins with a moderate sea and mixed visibility. Late December is busy with holiday travellers. |

A line that cannot be put in writing does not belong on a checklist.
What the day on board holds
The list on board is short and it holds up: air conditioning, a dining room, an outdoor lounge, sun decks, a sound system, snorkelling gear and free-flow water, coffee and tea. Weigh that list against your own, and tell us if an item you need is missing.
Where the boat rests once the sun is down
The boat stays at anchor overnight. The captain chooses the anchorage with the weather, and the choice is made on the day. You sleep at anchor and wake where you went to bed.
The first evening ends off Kalong, as the tentative plan has it. What the sky does there is not ours to promise, and neither is the exact bay. Day two is the long one, with Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo Island, Taka Makassar and Manta Point, so a quiet night matters. On the third morning the boat turns back to Labuan Bajo, and the trip ends between 12:00 and 12:30.
The checklist, turned on every boat you compare
Reverse the checklist and ask it of every boat you compare. How many guests, on how many beds? Which cabins have a private bathroom, and which share one? What is the fare for the whole boat, in one number? What counts as extra?
Ask for the answers in writing, with the company's registration number and an invoice before any payment. We give ours: PT Komodo Explorer Indonesia, NIB 1805260128363.
A boat that answers in adjectives has not answered. A boat that answers in numbers, and says what it lacks, is worth a second message.
FAQ
What makes a Komodo boat tour worth a higher price?
Facts you can check: the number of guests, the fare in one figure, the bathrooms, the balconies, the crew and the safety gear, each in writing. On Raja Bintang 01 those are up to 16 guests, IDR 78,000,000 (≈ USD 4,785) for three days, two balconies, a crew of 6 and counted life-saving equipment.
Is Raja Bintang 01 a premium liveaboard?
It is a 24 m phinisi with six cabins, two private balconies and a crew of six, sold as a whole boat or by the cabin. Whether that is premium depends on your own list; we give you the facts to decide.
What does the crew of six do?
Six crew sail with the boat. They handle the boat, the anchorage and the meals on board. Ask us if you need to know who is captain on your date, and we confirm it in writing once the crew is set.
Where does the boat sleep at night?
At anchor. The captain chooses the anchorage with the weather, and the choice is made on the day. The first night is planned off Kalong in the tentative day plan, but the order of stops and the bay depend on the sea.
