Arrive at night, sail in the morning: one night in Labuan Bajo before Raja Bintang 01

Updated 4 November 2026

Fly into Labuan Bajo the evening before you board Raja Bintang 01. The boat sails from Labuan Bajo only, pick-up runs between 09:30 and 12:00, and the airport lies about 2 km, roughly 10 minutes, from town. Flight details below are indicative, checked on 3 November 2026; confirm every schedule with the airline.

A boat that starts in Labuan Bajo, so your trip starts the night before

A boarding time is fixed. A flight is not. That gap is the whole reason for this note.

Raja Bintang 01 departs from Labuan Bajo harbour, and the pick-up window runs from 09:30 to 12:00. One point first, because people so often ask: the boat starts and ends in Labuan Bajo. It does not begin in Bali or Lombok, and there is no crossing from either island. Guests from those islands fly in, sleep one night on land, and step aboard the next day.

The boat's own advice is the same: arrive one day early, so that a cancelled or delayed flight costs you an evening and not the departure. If you do miss the boat, catching up means a taxi boat, and the guest pays for it. A night of margin costs a hotel room. A missed departure costs the trip.

Komodo Airport is the only airport for the area, with international status since 2024, as Antara reported on 27 April 2024. There is no airfield on Komodo Island itself.

Three origins, three flights, one rule

Everything in this section is indicative and was checked on 3 November 2026. Airlines retime flights, add routes and drop them. Read each line as the first question to put to the airline, not as a timetable.

  • Bali (Denpasar). The main route, about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes in the air. Several Indonesian airlines fly it. One operator counts four to six flights a day, a resort blog counts eight to ten in the dry months, so plan on a choice of flights and not on a number.
  • Jakarta. A direct flight takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours. Jakarta keeps a clock one hour behind Labuan Bajo, so the arrival time on your ticket reads an hour earlier than the clock on the wall.
  • Lombok. A direct turboprop hop of about an hour. Detik reported three flights a week, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, when it opened on 22 July 2025. Whether that pattern still holds is the first thing to ask. If it does not, the connection goes through Bali.

We give no airfare here: fares move with the season and with how early you book. Tickets bought separately, a long-haul flight plus a domestic hop for instance, mean you collect your bags and check in again between the two.

The night itself: landing, hotel, morning

The landing

From the terminal to the centre of Labuan Bajo is about 2 km, a drive of roughly 10 minutes. Send us your flight number and the hour you expect to land. Pick-up and drop-off between airport or hotel and the boat belong to the booking, and we plan the arrival transfer from the flight details.

The hotel and dinner

We work with partner hotels in Labuan Bajo, and the hotels page lists them. Room rates move with your dates, so we confirm yours in writing. Choose on three plain tests. Will the hotel take a late check-in? Can breakfast be early? Will it release your bags at pick-up time? Get all three answers in writing. Nothing is scheduled for the evening, and we run no programme. Walk to the water if you like, and eat in town.

The morning

Send us the hotel name by the day before. The pick-up comes to the hotel inside the 09:30 to 12:00 window, and the crew takes it from there. Keep sandals or shoes for trekking, sunblock and emergency cash in the bag you carry yourself.

What the extra night protects you from

Three failures are on record or easy to foresee.

  • A late inbound flight. A connection that slides by two hours costs part of a dinner when you sleep in town, and costs the boat when you do not.
  • A cancelled leg. With a spare evening, a rebooked flight still lands before pick-up.
  • A closed airport. Volcanic ash from Lewotobi Laki-laki closed Komodo Airport on 10 November 2024, according to Bisnis. Closures like that are rare, and a spare night is the only protection that works against one.

None of this guarantees a seat on a given flight, and we do not book flights. What we do is write the pick-up around the flight you hold, and tell you in writing when we have heard of a change.

Short notes for guests flying in from far away

Labuan Bajo runs on a clock eight hours ahead of UTC. These notes are brief by design.

  • From China. We know of no direct flight from the mainland to Labuan Bajo, so plan a connection in Bali or Jakarta. Beijing time is the same as Labuan Bajo time, so there is no jet lag to budget for. We answer on WeChat as well as WhatsApp.
  • From Germany. If your long-haul ticket ends in Bali or Jakarta, buy the Labuan Bajo leg as a separate domestic ticket, and book it for the day before boarding.
  • From France. A flight that lands in Bali at dawn can connect to an evening flight to Labuan Bajo the same day. Take that, and keep the boarding morning free.
  • From Italy. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur have direct flights to Labuan Bajo a few times a week on a schedule that has already changed since 2025. Ask the airline before you build a plan on them.
  • From Spain. Labuan Bajo is six or seven hours ahead of continental Europe, depending on daylight saving. The night before is also the night your body clock catches up.

Entry rules sit outside our control. Check the immigration portal at evisa.imigrasi.go.id for visa on arrival and e-VoA, and lovebali.baliprov.go.id for the Bali levy, which applies only if you enter Bali.

On the last day, and the flight home

The trip ends at the harbour between 12:00 and 12:30. Book the flight home after 13:00, or take the next day, which is the choice we would make for any long onward journey. The airport is the same 10 minutes away, but the airline's check-in cut-off is what binds you, and each airline sets its own.

A last note on what this article cannot do. It cannot promise a flight, a fare or a hotel room, and it names no airline schedule as fixed. What it can do is move the risk from the boarding morning to the evening before, where it is cheap. Tell us your dates, your origin and your flight numbers on WhatsApp, and we send back a pick-up plan in writing.

FAQ

Can I fly in on the morning of boarding?

Only if your flight lands well before the 09:30 to 12:00 pick-up window and you still have time to reach the meeting point. A morning arrival leaves no margin for a late aircraft or a lost bag. We advise the evening before, and we say so in writing when you book.

Does Raja Bintang 01 sail out of Bali or Lombok?

No. The boat sails from Labuan Bajo and returns there, and no route starts in Bali or Lombok. Guests on those islands fly to Labuan Bajo, sleep a night on land and board the next morning, so the flight is the only leg to plan.

How far is the airport from town?

Komodo Airport is about 2 km from the centre of Labuan Bajo, a drive of roughly 10 minutes. The road on the day decides the minutes. Ask us for the transfer when you send your flight number.

When should my flight home leave?

After 13:00 on the last day, or the next day. The trip ends at the Labuan Bajo harbour between 12:00 and 12:30, and the airline's check-in cut-off comes on top of that. Confirm the cut-off with your airline, because each carrier sets its own.
