The dragon walk: Komodo Island, or Rinca when the plan says so

Updated 4 November 2026

A Komodo or Rinca dragon walk is led by a park ranger. The three-day plan of Raja Bintang 01 names Komodo Island on day 2, and the two-day route names Rinca; the dragon walk is on Komodo Island or Rinca, as the day plan allows. No sighting is promised. The whole boat costs IDR 78,000,000 (≈ USD 4,785).

The ranger walk, Komodo Island or Rinca

The dragon walk is the stop everyone has heard of, and it is the one that needs the most plain talk. Rangers lead every walk on Komodo and Rinca, and no one walks alone.

  • Arrival: dry earth, a ranger's briefing at the station and a signed list.
  • At the stop: a short, medium or long trail; most day plans take the shorter one.
  • Leaving: a dragon in view, or the walk without one, and the tender back to the boat.

Komodo Island's walks start at the Loh Liang station. Which island you walk depends on the route and the weather: the three-day plan names Komodo Island, the two-day plan names Rinca.

Shoes, water and the distance

Wear closed shoes, because the trails are dry and uneven. Add long sleeves or sunscreen, a hat and water, since there is little shade. Keep food out of your pockets, because the animals smell it. Follow the ranger's instructions exactly, and stay on the marked paths.

Short, medium and long trails exist on Komodo Island, and most day plans take the shorter one. Rinca's short trail takes about 30 minutes and is the easiest for families. Walking alone is prohibited, and every guest signs up with the ranger before the hike.

The ranger is part of the park package, which is separate from the fare and quoted in writing. The ranger fee is paid per group and confirmed on your quote. The captain chooses between the islands with the weather, and the day plan is tentative.

No sighting is promised

No sighting is ever promised. The dragons are wild, and a ranger tells you where they are, not where you wish them to be. A walk without one is still a walk through a dry savannah with a guide who knows the ground.

The walk is not a zoo visit, there is no photo guarantee, and no dragons live on Padar. A drone is not part of the walk either: it needs a park permit that we arrange on request. The ranger sets the rules. That settles it.

If a dragon does appear, the ranger decides how close the group goes, and the group goes no closer than the ranger allows, whatever the lens says.

Where the walk sits in the plan

On the three-day route the walk follows Pink Beach on day two, ahead of Taka Makassar and Manta Point. The two-day route puts Rinca on the first day, before the sunset at Kalong. The whole boat costs IDR 78,000,000 (≈ USD 4,785) for up to 16 guests on the three-day route.

Ask us which island the dates suggest. We confirm the plan in writing, and tell you the moment the captain changes it. If the walk matters more to you than the snorkelling, say so at booking, and we pass it to the crew.

FAQ

Is Komodo worth it on a phinisi trip?

Yes, for the park and the guide, though no sighting is promised. It begins with dry earth and a ranger's briefing, then a short trail through savannah where the animals are wild and unpredictable. It ends with a dragon in view, or with the walk alone.

How long do we stay at Komodo?

The captain sets the time ashore on the day, with the tide and the weather. The rangers set the walk and the day plan sets the hour. Short, medium and long trails exist, and day plans take the shorter one. Ask us for the plan on your date.

Can children or older travellers manage Komodo?

The short trails suit most guests, and Rinca's trail of about 30 minutes suits families. Closed shoes are required, and there is little shade. Tell us about mobility conditions before booking, and we say plainly whether the route fits.
